It was a "message" from God. The friend of the chap that was found "nailed" at the begining of the show was the murderer. Those being murdered were all in the same regiment during and after the war. The old Guy had been the chaplin and had witnesed the rape of his "girlfreind" at the hands of the victims. It was his revenge for the terrible act that had caused his girlfriend to commit suicide many years ago. He had had difficulty in tracking them all down after they had been demobed which is why the crimes had been perpertrated over such a long time.
