I live in an apartment on a small estate for over 55s.

I've found a document amongst my paperwork that lists every owner and each owning shares in the lease.

What exactly does this mean?

My old head doesn't grasp and retain as much as it used to do.

It may just be a nominal £1 share that gets passed on when you sell/move onto the next resident, to give them voting rights in some sort of management company/residents association
