//Last year, the best male and best female categories were scrapped and replaced with a single award honouring artists “irrespective of gender”.

At the time, critics warned that the move could be detrimental to women.//

So now it's not only women in sport who are affected by this abject nonsense - or women who appreciate the safety of their women-only toilets and changing facilities, Looks like the critics were right. Will there come a time when women are ignored altogether?

It's their own fault for not identifying as men. Otherwise they'd have romped home.

Naomi, I'm playing the Devil's advocate here. Might it be that 'on the day' the best performances were all men. Conversely if it had been 80 to 20 in favour of women it would mean that year, the better recognised performances were mainly female? Perhaps we need a trend over say five years to prove any bias.
One thing I do know is that there's come a time when I ignore all five of these leading lights.

well, who'd 'a thought it?
Not sure I can think of high profile equivalent in sport other than SPOTY.
And there lots of women get nominated.

It's their own fault for not identifying as men. Otherwise they'd have romped home.
What do we want?

Equality!

When do we want it?

Errr, after the awards season as we're that shallow and insecure.
Adele won last year. As the article says, for those who don’t identify as men or women, the male / female categories lead to exclusion, such as Sam Fender.
Apologies, Sam Smith.
The only argument against that I can see is : fewer awards and less of a bean feast :-)

These are award ceremonies not actual competitions
They’ll be making the UK Prime Minister a gender neutral role next, and all sorts of not men can *** the country up.
not sure what that adds to the conversation gromit or what your point is. Glad you clarified the Sam Fender thing Zacs. Regarding Sam Smith I wonder how many times commentator's and interviewers have to practice refering to , er ,them as they/them not he/him, and how many retakes they have to do, as it just would'nt come natural to me.
All 5 of the nominees are popular- I like 4 of them, but Central Cee not to my liking, but surely Stormzys been around years and had his awards, sureley theres some women whose just as deserving- Dua Lipa, Becky Hill, Lizzo spring to mind and am sure I forgot some
I like gromit's point. If they had a "best prime minister of 2022" award, would Truss's failure to win it indicate that a separate female PM section was needed?
How long before the awards are accused of being sexist? Then there will have to be equal male and female winners. What a tangled web we weave.
all nonsense, it's like they are trying to make real! females inferior
another male misogny trait, they should give them an island call
odd.. where all the himshe's use the backdoor.
I'm beginning to think that we (women) are being shoved aside and back to not just the kitchen, but the essential jobs.
It is possible, of course, that this year's best acts were male.

On a personal note - I am hugely aware of the horrors of real gender dysphoria and am still in mourning for someone I cared deeply about and tried to help. But real G.D. is very, very rare. When it is real then every care should be, must be extended to the person concerned.

Understanding this must not be at the expense of downgrading womanhood general whose rights have been so hard fought for.

I am really worried that if, for instance, I see an obvious male in what should be a female space and I challenge that person then I would be held to be in the wrong!
I can foresee a lot of fines heading my way........ :)
Its interesting tho to read on the BBC website
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-64264069
that "Florence + the Machine was the only solo British female artist to have a new album in the top 100 best-sellers of 2022"
So does this suggest theres a gender bias in the music tastes of people and there choice of artist. Is it because womens not getting the chance.... yet half the current songs on the radio are by female artistes
Two of the men on the shortlist I've never heard of.
Unless you listen to something like capital extra or on tiktok you wouldn't hear much central cee drill and Fred again are pretty new
