But in Bridge North and South are partners, not opponents.

You're quite correct Jack and I'm squirming to find a way round it! ;)))

Can't think it can be anything else though.
They are opponents of east & west ;-)
Perhaps the setter should have used "Opposites".
North and South poles on a magnet?
That's very weak, though. Setter's fault, he should have used partners (standard indicator). Similarly any combination of North or South with East or West signifies opponents.
