Clearly he is wrong as there would have been no need for a live programme to announce who it was!
There was a brief shot of John Hurt at the end of the last series, maybe your Grandson thought he was the next Doctor?
It said at the end "Introducing John Hurt as The Doctor." Reading about that episode on Wikipedia, it seems John Hurt's character falls between Paul McGann's Doctor and Christopher Eccleston's Doctor.

John Hurt is also pencilled in for the 50th Anniversary special.

I too have a Dr Who related question....

Have we to put up with these continuous 'mock' or in some cases not so 'mock' swearing replies during Peter Capaldi's stint as the Doctor?
I hope not. The Thick of it was an excellent series but nothing to do with Doctor Who.
Matt Smith had not resigned at the end of the last series, John Hurt was being introduced for a forthcoming story.
If your grandson is correct, and I didn't see to say, all the punters must have won an absolute fortune betting on the bookie's favourite since then.
Basically "The Name Of The Doctor" leads in to the 50th anniversary special,in which John Hurt plays a version of the Doctor. There was some dialogue about this being a version who was not worthy of the name The Doctor. There are many precedents for this in the series, like the The Valeyard.I suspect it may also start the setting up the circumstances for the regenerations which will come after the twelfth regeneration.
I too am bored with the Malcolm Tucker 'jokes' it shows lack of imagination and lazy thinking.
Isn't it a little odd to 'argue' with a grandchild.
In a nutshell, John Hurt's character is not the new Doctor, but one of the previous Doctor's we haven't seen on TV before.
Hurt will be seen in the 50th Anniversary Special on 23rd November this year, when all will be revealed.
Peter Capaldi will take over from Matt Smith, but not until the end of the Christmas Special, which hasn't been recorded yet.

At least you don't have to knit endless scarves, embroider endless collars, knit peter davison cricket jumpers.
What did I ever do to deserve this?
