Sometimes if you use an alternative make of cartridge the sensor cannot detect the ink and assumes it is empty and won't work.Could that be a reason here?

I have used the hp ink cartridge brought it from a shop as i dont trust the net for that kind of thing,i have had alook at the links the other kind ppl have given and i will be trying out what it says,i have noticed that some ink has come out near where the cartridges are,not sure if this is meant to happen or not? its just frustrating but thank you for all the help
Take the cartridges out and put them in again. Sometimes works.

Well, good luck. I hate problems that seem hard to solve. Have to rely on my student neighbour or 13 year old granddaughter - and they're always away on holiday when the crises occur!

The pull off tabs is that the orange bits,if so then yes and yes this problem does seem hard to sort out,it's harder if ur on ur own,all I want is for my printer to work again :/
something you might try is this:-
Remove print cartridges, gently wipe the brass electrical contacts on the cartridges with a tissue moistened with methylated spirits, then replace cartridges.
Sometimes grease from the fingers when handling can block the contacts and the printer cannot recognize them any more until cleaned.
This sometimes happens to my HP printer as I refill my own cartridges and have done for the last 12 years.
Just a thought!
