Stupid question but I have always wanted to know the answer...

When Highlights are created for Match of the Day is the commentary added after, or does the commentator commentate on the whole game as it happens or is it somehow a combination of the two?

Commentator is at the game, recording as it happens.
As Thanatos says. Also when there are replays the commentators often commentate on the replay and these days the replays are almost instantly available and they slot them in when there is not much happenning live so when the highlights are edited together they often include replays with the original commentry of the highlight of the incident if you know what I mean!
