I have a feeling the link was the armed services, but I didn't hear the broadcast answer.

Sorry, Quizzywig, I can't actually give the question as it was a connection between three pieces of music which were played. And I don't know what they all were.

The answer is GOLD. The first of Bach's GOLDberg Variations, an excerpt from Lehar's GOLD and Silver Waltz (cheekily broadcast a few minutes later!!) and Wagner's RheinGOLD, the Rheinmaide
