Can anyone verify that this sign was originally meant to alert rescuers at an accident site that there was a baby in the vehicle?

was it not intended as a ...so keep your distance ...sign ?
that I believe was the original intention as pre safety seats/harnesses a small child could be thrown clear of the vehicle or hidden in the wreckage
that was the original idea. But no-one ever takes them out so tbh i dont think the emergency services take much note anymore.
Yes, it started in Germany when both parents had been taken unconscious out of the wreckage of a car to hospital but it was quite a while later when the baby was found.

Totally unnecessary sign now as red said !
The number of times I've seen such cars and people carriers with one of those in the rear window - being driven as if by a manic!

Those signs certainly swing impressively as their vehicle whips around a roundabout almost on two wheels or disappears into the distance way over the speed limit! Most alarming of all is that you often catch sight of a baby in it's carrier strapped into the front seat while Mummy risks it's very life and limb!
why should you be warned to keep your distance just because theres a child in the car?
The" baby on board" sign was meant to make money for the person who first came up with the idea, otherwise totally useless.
I tend not to park next to anyone with the sign in the car because, more often than not, the bu99ers swing the doors open with complete disregard of vehicles parked next to them and promply denting them
It was indeed. After an accident in the USA one car went into a ditch with lots of undergrowth. the female driver was rescued unconscious from the vehicle. when she came to in hospital she asked if her baby was OK. When questioned she explained that the baby was in a carry cot on the back seat. The rescue service hurried back to the car and found the baby covered in debris but otherwise OK. A close call! The mother came up with the idea of the sign, but it should not be used when there is no child in the vehicle.

I can't stand these signs.

They have nothing to do with safety and everything to do wth "ooh, look at me, aren't I clever, I've produced a child".

I couldn't give a tinker's cuss that you've managed to produce a baby - producing a baby is not a 'miracle', it is simply a chemical reaction.

I can't stand the derivatives either - Little Monkey on Board, Little Princess on Board - but I have a very special loathing for girls who have "Babe on Board" signs in their cars, if nothing else because they can always be described as many things, but 'Babe' would never be one of them.
Sounds like an urban myth to me...
I agree with flip_flop about the babe sign,& many of the others on display. I would love to see a sign that could be shown in the rear window by means of a switch which would tell the clown trying to climb up my exhaust pipe that this is a 30,40,50 zone whichever I am driving in & who resents the fact that I am driving at the correct speed.
Makes me laugh when I see these signs and the parents in the front are smoking. "keep your distance from our baby but we'll still gas it with cyanide as we drive" - PMSL - As others have said completely pointless sign, serves no purpose whatsoever. I used to have one on my bike for track days!
Driving along an urban dual carriageway, 50mph limit, everyone behaving nicely when Jeepy thing in front wobbles and passenger door opens. Car wobbles even more and I can see driver leaning across to close door. Wobbling stops. I gingerly pass as Jeep has now slowed to about 40mph. As I approach door flies open again, wobble, driver stretches across and door closes. I pass looking carefully.

There is a kid on the passenger seat in gales of laughter as he opens the door again. Dad is shouting and very distracted, not looking ahead, and I am past before he leans over again to close door. In my mirror I see him swerving rather than wobbling this time, Other drivers are giving him a wide berth.

Children are a danger to everyone around on the road. Back to topic, yes the signs were originally for information in case of accident.
presumably the 'Jeepy Thing' would have child locks on the doors, why didn't the creep use them ?
You don't get child locks on front doors.
Wasn't there a case a while ago when the rescue services went back to the vehicle that was in danger of exploding because there was a Baby on Board sign in the car, only to find that there was no-one there?
Shouldn't it say 'baby onboard'
