A woman has just said on the Jeremey Kyle show this morning that she could not keep her obese daughters weight down when she was young years ago as there was no low fat food around then. I would have thought as she is talking about 25 years ago that there was the same fish meat and chicken and veg around. You don't need to live on ready made low fat meals to lose weight as I well know. I only keep a couple in my freezer for emergency if I am late in getting home. Apart from people that have a medical problem and find it difficult to lose weight I say you cut out the fat and the crap and you will lose weight as I have done.

That's just an ignorant lazy person. Veg is very cheap...always has been.
She said there was no low fat food around? Amazing that the human race survived this long isn't it!

I agree with you, too many people make too many excuses and won't accept they are just fat because they eat too much crap and don't do enough excersize.
I just don't understand why they can't cook a healthy meal. Stick a chicken in the oven and throw some veg in a steamer. Easy peasy.

Better, and easier, than sausage and chips..

I only had 3 stone to lose and that only crept on after I stopped smoking 13 years ago.But don't you find that any overweight person you know does not praise you as they are so envious that they can't do it. but all others do. I have lost 2 st and just got 1 to go and thats with eating sensible .
Do you think alot of it could be because these women don't know how to cook?

It's all very well and good saying "cook a chicken, etc etc etc..." but how many of these women know how to cook it? I imagine cookery classes at school and dabbling in the kitchen with mum didn't feature largely in their lives when growing up.

The majority of us know how to cook a chicken (I hope anyway), but how many posts will we see over in F&D nearer the time asking how long to cook a turkey for etc? It's basic stuff, but not everyone knows it. Chicken nuggets prefrozen and bangers are far safer to not get wrong when you don't know basic cooking.
That's so great Wendilla! Well done. You must feel so chuffed with yourself.

A few years ago I was 14st and at 5'2, that is quite a lot overweight but I didn't try and make any excuses, I was just lazy. Over the years I've been to Slimming World on and off and now I'm down to 10.5 which isn't ideal but I'm doing it in my own time. I actually do excercize these days and pay attention to what I stuff in my mouth. It's actually not that hard when you chose to do it.

I know someone who is really overweight, worryingly so. The thing is she has done slimming world and lost a lot of weight through it but then stopped and always used the excuse that the kids school breaks got in the way of it, etc. Excuse. I was speaking to them recently and she said she had just accepted that she was always going to be that overweight and so just wouldn't bother anymore. Made me so angry, especially as she has kids to think about.
You are absolutely right Boo, My thoughts exactly.

some overweight people do have a really healthy meals, the only problem is they over eat.
Question Author
Yes Boo you have a good point there. I am retired and when I was young my mother used to cook proper meals and same with my daughter she learned from me. But you would think if they were really interested in losing weight they would make a point of learning as plenty of cookery books around and tips from tv.
Ta Jem

Which begs the question over whether cooking needs to be taken more seriously at school.

My friends daughter is currently at high school, and she's cooked, amongst other useless foods, lasagne and cheesecake. I mean c'mon, seriously? What's up with learning how to cook a chicken, making it stretch to several meals with roasts, curries etc? Basic stews, corned beef hash etc. Whilst these foods aren't glamorous they are cheap, substantial and will no doubt be pretty necessary with this recession we've got going on now.
I have a pretty healthy diet and cook almost everynight. My sister eats crap. Her idea of cooking is frying some chicken and tipping a jar of 'chicken tonight' on it. That or take aways. She's obese and so is her daughter....he youngest (6) is starting to put weight on.
sorry wendilla, i seem to have somehow sidestepped from your orginal topic to a rant about cooking in general.

Apologies.

Snowyball you hit the nail on the head yes it is the portions that count.
Question Author
No problem Boo it is interesting reading.
That's true B00. My neice makes all sorts of crap at school. Why not just some decent cooking?

I have to be honest and say I rarely cook, hate cooking and don't know how to cook (always have someone to cook for me) but I know plenty of people I could ask how to cook a bit of chicken and if you are embarassed that you don't know how to cook a simple meal, it's not like it's hard to go on a site like this and ask or there are plenty of "simple recipes" online to find.

Xfactor and I started a thread on Body and Soul under Health and Fitness. The ed has kept it up and we have gained a few people and lost a few but it has been going a few months now. It has been a help to some as we don't dictate what to do we just give our ideas of what we have done each week.
how many times has Jeremy has said ' in laymans term?' i'm sure he said it about 8 times now!!
Question Author
Now you got me listening out for that Snowyball
as many times as he says "at the end of the day"
