Unbeaten??
Watchman? I have 'Night Watchman' in my head. Is that something to do with cricket?
Yes Knowabit, it's when a recognised batsman is out towards the end of play and the batting side don't want to risk losing another batsman at that late stage so they send out a tailender, usually one of the bowlers, as a "night watchman".
This is a bit of a strange question because it's ambiguous. Does it mean the last player to go out to bat, or does it mean the only player who isn't out? As I well remember, Graham Gooch when playing for England as an opening batsman, was still there, not out, at the end of the innings. I don't think he could ever be called a "tailender" but he was unbeaten.
Graham Gooch 'carried his bat' through the innings when he was unbeaten, that's the cricketing term.
Thank you Corylus, I do know the term "carried his bat' but he was still the last man in wasn't he? and I think "carried his bat" has more than 8 letters.
