Telegraph today reports

“£20 Elgar note withdrawal 'a national disgrace'

The arts will no longer be represented on Bank of England notes from this Thursday – a decision branded a "national disgrace" by a music academic

The older style £20 note bearing an image of Sir Edward Elgar ceases to be legal tender at midnight on Wednesday (June 30), replaced by a new note featuring the Scottish economist Adam Smith.”

Smith expounded, in The Wealth of Nations, how rational self-interest and competition can lead to economic prosperity and well-being. It also provided one of the best-known intellectual rationales for free trade and capitalism. Smith also wrote other philosophic works .The Wealth of Nations is considered one of the great achievements in human intellectual history". P. J. O'Rourke describes Smith as the "founder of free market economics".

Whilst

Elgar gave us the Pomp and Circumstance Marches (with Land of Hope Glory lyrics since added), the glorious (played on Remembrance Day) Nimrod, Enigma Variations, masterpiece First Symphony, the Cello Concerto, the Violin Concerto, and many more great works. “… Anyone who doubts Elgar's genius should take the first opportunity of hearing The Dream of Gerontius, which remains his masterpiece,”

Do you agree with Prof Jeremy Dibble that: "The withdrawal of the Sir Edward Elgar £20 note is a national disgrace” - and the view that Elgar was the greater of the these two British giants ?

Does it really matter.... I am surprised they don't put David Beckkham, Katie Price and Somon Cowell on the notes as part of populist culture uk...
I've got Tracey Emin's Bedroom on the back of my £20. You don't think it is a fake do you?
*by a music academic *
Mr Dibble has done well for himself since he was a lowly Police Beat Officer.

And Gromit - why aint you wearing your Orange shirt ?
It's in the wash.

"It's in the wash"

all honorary ducthmen supposed to have two

make sure its there for Brazil - the old dutch will need all the support they can get !
Does anyone really give a stuff who's picture is on a note?
How many people can actually name who is on the back of £5, £10, £20 or £50 notes without looking

I know I certainly couldn't, the notes are in my wallet facing frontwards so I never actually look at the back, the only thing that interests me on them is the number denoting their value

......and for those who can perhaps you need to get a life

At the end of the day who cares? It's a piece of paper which is of monetary value. You spend it, not study it

rojash "Does anyone really give a stuff who's picture is on a note?"

Well done to Gromit the Great - what a shirt - now youll have to learn the Wilhelmus -all 300 verses of it - singing Elgars Land of Hope and Glory strictly verboten - till after Holland world cup final win !
Question Author
Gromit - hope youre not just a Flasher ?
The Dutch shirt will return.

Meanwhile, I've kicked the kraut off the £20 note!
Question Author
"The Dutch shirt will return" - youre restored to greatness

"Meanwhile, I've kicked the kraut off the £20 note!" - what about the scottish capitalist guy on the back ?
The Bank of England was basically CREATED by a Scottish money-man, Sir William Paterson, so another Scottish money-man has surely as much right to appear on that institution's notes as an English piano-tinkler! (A very good one, bit still...)
Question Author
Quizmonster - you is obviously an egghead and maybe scots - and I AM supporting Murray at this very moment - but it is self evident that the Bank of England notes should have an English Icon on the back and not another Scots blokey - its only fair - after all we've just had 13 years of our dear Scots mafia aka McBlair and McBroon and McDarling et al dictating to us whilst they created their very own backup Parliament in Scootland for the Salman Clan. And Scotland has got its own very great RBS as developed by Fred the Shred and now supported very largely by English taxpayers

So come on - give Elgar another chance !

Also have a listen to his Nimrod - shivers down anyones spine whos got one !

I have The Dream of Gerontius.

I also have the Jaqcueline du Pre recording of the Cello Concerto, which I think remains the definitive recording.

I haven't read The Wealth of Nations.

So ... I'll vote for Elgar.

But it could be worse ... they could have put J M Keynes on our money!
