I am binning off Sky and getting a freeview box instead. I live in East Yorkshire and am really struggling with the signal in this area. I am thinking of putting my current digital aerial on a 20' mast and lashing it to the chimney with a new mounting bracket. Would this improve the signal?

maybe, maybe not - I live in Bridlington, in a flat, my antenna is some 50 or 60 feet up, and the signal is still crap. The signal seems to be very patchy here.
it might but i would look into you signal with freeview first might be better to get cable in stead

Would be ideal to get cable. Unfortunately the local company around (K****ston Co**********ns) here have the monopoly around here and no cable company can get in. Would love to take up the offer from Virgin NTL and the others, but no can do.
Before you take the drastic action of mounting your aerial on a 20' Mast, what is your Analogue signal like ?
The Yorkshire Region does not switch over to Digital until 2011. If your reception is poor, it may be that the quality of your Aerial is not up to standard and needs Up-Grading now. A qualified Aerial Installer should have a Signal Meter to determine the strength of the signal. Unless you have always lived in a TV reception blackspot, I would replace your existing Aerial ASAP.
If you already have sky why not use the dish and box and get Freesat from Sky.

This is a FREE service (no monthly cost) and all you need is a card from Sky (20 I think).

You can pick up around 200 channels via your dish and Sky box..

On the link above, ignore all the costs mentioned, if you already have the dish and box it only costs you 20.

In the FAQ it says

Q: I already have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?

A: All you need to gain access to the free channels available on the digital satellite platform is a Freesat from Sky viewing card, which costs just 19.57. If youd like to access the interactive services available, youll also need a working phone line. To purchase a viewing card please phone Sky on 08448 244 400.
I'm in North Yorkshire and have freeview reception problems..............and I've had the new areial fitted....

Redman - The analogue signal is also Cr@p. I have some high trees nearby so they partially block out the signal. I have a digital aerial and at 1st it worked well. I have noticed that the mast and chimney fitting have bent slightly when we last had some very high winds. This is probably because of the size of the aerial and the mast can't take it. I thought the bigger the mast it might pick up more of the signal being blocked by the trees.
if the aerial is being blocked by trees then the only way to get a decent signal will be to raise the height of the aerial so it is above the trees.

Did you actually read VHG's posts, it's a good suggestion!

I did read it yes and it is a good idea. It might be worth considering. I speak to Wifey to see what she thinks.
Confusingly, FREESAT and FREESAT from SKY are different products. I have the BBCHD one.
