The Planet of the Apes as seen on Channel 5 was known as a re-imagining - so no, not exactly a re-make.

In the original film, the astronaught Taylor discovers he has returned to Earth many thousands of years into his own future, where apes rule.

The recent film took a leaf out of the original French novel and set the story on another planet, with the hero figure, Leo,  returning to Earth at the end to discover that the apes have taken over the planet too.

The re-make film implies that Thade ( the chimp General played by Tim Roth ), trapped in the remains of the human space station on his own planet, has somehow got it working and travelled to Earth before Leo ( Mark Wahlberg ), and turned the balance of power in favour of the apes.

Well, they had to think of something different because everyone is now familiar with the 'Statue Of Liberty' scene from the original, so they come up with the 'Abraham Lincoln memorial statue', except he's got a monkey face! So instead of the poweful climax of the original you're left asking: 'Is he still on earth?", "Did the apes change the statue or Is it a parralel ape universe?", "Can I have my money / two hours of my life back". Total tripe!

Apparently the DVD/VHS release came with a card (with diagrams) that explained the ending as no-one thought it made sense!
I think that it was deliberately vague, and devised as a means to provide an excuse for a sequel.
