Can anyone remember a children's tv programme, poss late 80's early 90's about a group of children (set in victorian times i think?) who went on different adventures and there was a little creature that could talk, that lived in a sandpit or something either in the bottom of the garden or in the woods? its driving me potty!!!

5 Children and It. The little thing was called Psamiad (Sameeadd)
If the kids are on 1/2 term in your area a new version will be playing at the cinema.

The BBC version you remember has just come out on DVD I think.

"Wishing a little harder everyday, wishing to chase the fears away.  In the twinkling of an eye you can grow tall or even fly; you don't know until you try so do......"

How sad is that - I actually remember nearly the entire theme tune!!!! It was brilliant!

Yeah, I loved Five Children and It. I've seen the trailer for the new film. The Psammead is played by Eddie Izzard. Looks great! Never read the book though...
