either a film, or perhaps one of the series that was made in the early eighties, that began with a child's birthday party in the house and the walls started to run with blood  (spoilt the cake and everything!) and everyone was screaming? Does anyone remember what this film was called and who was the actor that played the main male character.

hammer house of horrors,The House that Bled to Death
Nicholas Ball stars as the father of a family who move into a house with a deadly history also starring Brian Croucher ('Travis' Blakes7)

Is this the one you mean?

thanks for the reply, but don't think that the film was called "The house that bled to death," as i believe that that film starred Jonh Pertwee and Peter Cushing.  However, the main character in the film that i'm thinking of WAS Nicholas Ball now you mention it, so maybe i'm wrong.
I think dargonfly means that it was not a film but a television series called "The Hammer House of Horrors" and that particular episode was called "The house that bled to death". I remember watching it and remember the scenes you describe but not the actors. The Peter Cushing/ Jon Pertwee film was called "The House that Dripped Blood" (1970)
The episode is in the DVD box set of the TV series Hammer House of Horror

I remember this film.  It didn't actually start with the scene you describe, that came later.  Dragonfly is right saying the family (mam and dad plus little girl) moved into the house.

You don't find out till the end that the mam and dad were actually behind all of the nasty happenings, one of which I believe was to kill the family's pet cat.

At the end, mam and dad are seen celebrating because they've actually managed to sell the rights for their story which was their intention all along.  However, they don't know that their little daughter is listening, and although I can't exactly remember the last scene, you're left in no doubt that they are killed by the daughter as revenge for losing her cat/spoiling her party etc.

I think dragonfly is correct with the title.

'The house that Bled' is the one I remember, and it was a kids birthday party at the start.  MINGING!!!
