Where does the saying go to Putney come from. My mother often used it.

I'm not sure but depending on when she picked up the phrase it might be the same as saying "he's gone to East Ham" eg: One stop short of Barking - on the central line/tube map - the same as a sandwich short of a picnic hamper etc etc eg: mad!
