My husbands been suffering with a dry cough for a while now. He's been fine but last night he couldn't stop coughing and was basically up all night with it (kept me awake too even though he was downstairs and I was upstairs!). Tried the usual, linctus, honey, whiskey, water etc but none helped. Any ideas from anyone? He's not too bad through the day, just seems to get worse once he's home! Even worse, he's one of these men who can't cope with being "ill" and just loses his temper! Help!!

it could be allergies. speak to your chemist he'll recommend something.
How long is a while? May be worth a trip to the GP to see if they can shed any light.

I had a tickly cough for ages and wheezing before they found I had asthma and associated allergies.

Is there anything in the bedroom (especially if windows are shut) that could be irritating him eg plants or flowers or pot pourri, air fresheners used, animals sleeping.

He could try an antihistamine and see if that helps, try sleeping propped up and keep a drink by his bed and could try things like iced lollies or sucky sweets to keep his throat lubricated.

Breathing through his nose may help stop his throat being so irritated.

Covonia is good as well.

pholcodeine linctus
Perhaps he has asthma. The symptoms he is having are usual in Asthmatics, if he continues coughing like this he could cause a lot of damage. Why don't you encourage him to go along to his doctor. Has he any other symptoms?
A persistent dry cough is one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
