The money is coming from NHS Tayside, Dundee City Council and the Scottish government coffers.

In other words, the tax payer.
if this is a success and thousands of people quit where is the goverment going to get there tax from that they will lose on cigarettes ---- don't answer ----- us tax payers of course.
How do they prove you are a smoker in the first place, you could just say you are to get the "money".

Also how do they know people have given up, again they could just say they have.

I heard on the news this morning that similar schemes "had made thousands of people give up smoking"

Yeh right. Or maybe after getting the "money" the people SAID they had given up smoking.

(btw I hate smoking and would love to see people give it up, but why should people be paid to stop vices).
Following on from my previous append:

Are we going to pay arsonist to stop setting fire to buildings?

Or pay muggers to stop stealing from people?

Or pay overweight people to stop eating?

Or pay burglers to stop breaking into people's houses?
Are we gonna pay single mothers to pop out kids willy nilly and pay them ?

Are we gonna pay alcoholics more money in their giros because theyre alcohlolics?

Are we gonna pay kids to stay at school?

Are we gonna pay folk to stay at home watching jeremy kyle and give them a motability car to get them to the pub/bingo when their main illness is laziness ?

Well?Ehhh?

Sorry forgot all those things are done.

Im off .

Vehelpfulguy - you have to undergo a blow test which shows up nicotine. To keep getting the money for the full 12 weeks you have to take the test each week.

A non-smoker smoking a couple of fags before embarking on the course will not do -l it simply won't produce the correct results and in any case there must be in your medical records that you have a history of smoking.
why dont they just keep increasing the price of cigarettes, along side the bans in public places ect...eventually people wont be able to afford to smoke
If they are worried about pregnant mothers who smoke then the best solution would be to provide a condom in every cigarette packet.
It has to said....Leg End......single mothers dont have 'virgin births'!"

Tell the chaps to tie a knot in it!
'Are we gonna pay single mothers to pop out kids willy nilly and pay them ? '

I think you'll find that they already do!
Sorry didn't read your post to the end!
I smoke 10-15 a day, I have cut down from 40/day in 3 years which is a massive achievement in itself. I have tried to quit before but here is what has happened to me.

I have a serious bowel condition which does not allow me to have the nicotine replacement gum as it will and has put me in hospital.

I cannot have patches as the 3 days I wore them I ended up back in A&E with a massive allergic reaction to them!

I was then, about 12 months later, prescribed Zyban. My liver nearly packed up on it so was forced to stop taking the tablet and I started smoking again upon medical advice.

Yes, there is Champnix but given the fact that several people have had major reactions to this it is unlikely I will be allowed to try this due to my mental and physical health history.

I cannot afford hypnotherapy and do not have the willpower to kick it cold turkey. I have also been told by my other half if I do it that way she will not live with me.

So for those that think it is easy to quit, you tell me how the hell I am meant to quit smoking??
Oh and by the way, I am a recovering alcoholic (dry for over 4 years) and am ex-homeless through a money being stolen from me accounts (not booze relate)! I do not work but I DO NOT CLAIM BENEFITS because of a trust fund.
That aint fair.... smokers gets reward for smoking, all the tax payers pay for their treatment to stop smoking and they get paid as well???

Why dont they pay NON SMOKERS for not smoking??!!! i think im going to pretend i smoke so i get paid for life... u get paid till you quit right?? ........
I think too many non-smokers are answering this question. I am a counsellor for drug and alcohol addicts. I was told several years ago by a leading psychiatrist that nicotine is harder to quit than heroin. So those of you who misjudge smokers and say it is easy to give up think twice!
sorry disagree with giving up smoking is harder than giving up heroin, i gave up 20+years ago we dint have all the help they get now, yep i had my bad days, but all in all it wasnt that bad!now i drink like a fish!
Well lucky you! Read my first post on the thread and see what advice you can give me then mate!

i am an ex smoker myself Grumpy and I gave up last year. I am just rhetorically questioning where the money is coming from to fay for this scheme.
Wasnt a case for being lucky dont be fasistious!i worked on it and suffered my god, i had 2 young children to cope with a hacking cough and no money, it seems that everyone thinks a patch or a pill is the way forward with no effort,i say well done to anyone who at least tries and to succeed will be fantastic!!!
I too am an ex-smoker. Gave up in 94 after smoking 40+ a day for 40+ years. Been dry for over 12 months after my liver got poorly.

It's not easy but it can be done - the trick is wanting to.
