As I am already having problems getting all the freeview channels - will the signal be stronger before the analogue(?) is switched off? Hope that makes sense

When analogue is switched off in your area, digital will then be 'full power' for want of a better term, so the signal strength will hopefully be much stronger.

You can buy a signal booster suitable for the digital signal.

To be honest I don't think it is so we will probably have to upgrade that too.
