ok this is a tricky one but i have faith in you all, at the start of the tv show Cheers they show some old (black and whiteish) pictures of people enjoying a drink... in one such picture a small bald man holds aloft a newspaper baring the headline WE WIN... but what, what have they won? any ideas its been puzzling me for years.

I always thought it was referring to W W II
If its an accurately researched picture (i.e. Boston in the early part of the twentieth century), then it could well be a Red Sox victory in the World Series. That would be the only event worthy of such a headline in that city.
i agree with slimjim i assumed in was baseball related
Boston Red Sox last won the World Series in 1918, so it may well be a comment on their drought since then!
