In the reccent episodes of Doctor Who , the UNIT soldiers were carrying submachine guns. They were a bit like the MP5 but with an M16 type carry handle.

Were they real or just made up for the series?

BTW try as he might John Barrowman never looked like he was firing a weapon

They were most likely hired from an armourer that regularly supply props to TV and film production companies.
They may have been modified for another production.
Only a futuristic gun that is required to do something specific would be made for the show, it is expencive to do so.
