What came first - The Muppets or Sesame Street?

Well I was going to say that Sesame street preceeded The Muppet Show, but the muppets had appeared earlier in a other productions like a Cinderella adaptation. Then I discovered this Muppet timeline:http://www.muppetcentral.com/articles/timeline/tim
eline_50s.shtml and was amazed to find they have been around since the 1950s!
