Sad Films; a postcript.

I was going to post this in "Sad Films" (below),
but thought it might merit a question in its own right (?).
When I was about 10 (in the 70's), I saw a film on TV after which I had to retire to the garden shed in order to cry my eyes out for half an hour or so. The basic plot, as I recall, was a "whatdunnit", revolving around the fact that some sheep were being killed by an unidentified animal. A "bad dog" stray was suspected and the locals went out trying to kill it, but it transpired that the perpetrator was the main family's (very gentle) dog. I seem to recall it being shot by the father on a cliff edge.
Anyone any idea what this film might have been?

Gawd - I'm blubbing now too!! I do remember a film where a child was covered in blood and they blamed the family dog (who was also covered in blood) so shot it (still remember those big gentle eyes looking up at the dad) They then found a wolf/Fox/Mad dog (something like that) behind the settee and realised that the dog had protected the child against the mad thing.
I'm now starting to well up again...

There there Ali. That sounds like the Welsh fable of Gelert (or a rip off of it anyway). I don't think it's the film I'm thinking of, but it's certainly the kind of thing that would start the waterworks for me too!
