I was wondering, when a director shoots a movie, does he film the scenes sequentially or does he film all scenes that will take place in a particular location first for example. If both are used do some directors favour one type over the other?

As I understand it, the vast majority of films are not filmed in order, but as you suggest, all scenes in one location will be filmed together, or with other considerations in mind (for example, if haircuts change half way through, etc). The on ly film I know of that was filmed largely sequentially was ET, which was so that the children wouldn't get confused.
