discoloured taps

i had to use a very strong industrial chemical sink deblocker for my bathroom sink as we could not get to the pipes.it did the trick,but the gold coloured taps look a bit discoloured ,as it gave off a vapour. I have tried polishing them but they look no better,any tips ?

Use a mild abrasive like Brasso or Dura Glit or even toothepaste it may work and it won't harm the gold surface.

I guess Don1 is saying it won't do any more harm than the present situation. Any sort of polish is abrasive and will remove a little of the top surface. If it was just a vapour that reacted with the plating, you may be able to remove a top discoloured surface without removing all the plating to expose the underlying base metal.
