I'm a big sci-fi film fan ,I loved all the star wars films ,especially the first three. In the early days when I was a teenager I loved films like the 'planet of the apes' ,'soylent green' ,and a 'clockwork orange' ,to name a few,,but I'm wondering what you lot think is the greatest sci-fi film of all time?...........

Blade runner is a great film and still stands the test of time.I actually prefer the original version with the film noir narration even with the borrowed ending from The Shining !
Look at my name. What do you think?
That's tough one, Blade runner is excellent but I think it just get's edged out by the original Terminator.

I agree with Mattk on the Blade Runner comment, sithlord, like most Star Wars fans,I know you wont be swayed, but I agee with you in a way ,as a complete saga Star Wars will take a lot of beating.Loosehead,,Terminator is a great film, although I think more from an action point of view, than a great sci-fi plot [I actually prefered Arnie in ['Total recall' ] ..
Total Recall was a blast, I quite enjoyed that and it's not my kind of film usually, best Sci-fi in years imho was the vastly underrated Event Horizon, I really liked that but I did like Alien too.
Westworld
Blade runner is my favourite film, certainly the best sci-fi film ever made.
Got to be Bladerunner. One of those films where everything works perfectly together, the story, the cast, the design, the music. Considering it was made nearly 25 years ago it hasn't aged at all - still looks great.

Well , Star Wars is the business , but a nod to the Alien films as well.

Sorry , I couldn't stand Blade Runner.

I would say Terminator 2. There is just something about that film that even 100 years down the line you will look back at it and say wow. Blade Runner is very very good but I can only seem to watch it once then I cant watch it again and again like other films.
I think I'd go for "Blade Runner" as well. I too prefer the "voice over" version, but would like to see the fabled version that has a much more pared-down voice over.

I first saw BR at a preview that Starburst magazine organised, and it blew me away. I'm glad that it has recently got the recognition it deserves - reviews at the time were poor.
I loved Blade Runner and Terminator I, but I think my favourite is the first Alien film. I also have a soft spot for Silent Running with Bruce Dern. It's the only Sci Fi film that has made me cry.

Robocop. Not the best sci-fi film, but certainly worth a mention.

The crumby sequels and TV show that followed we can forget about.

That's a toughie. I agree with Noxlumos about Total Recall....I loved it and have watched it a few times now. Also prefer Terminator 2 to the first T movie. The star Wars original 3 are part of me because of my age, so are always going to be loved, but I have to agree, Blade Runner (original version) is still an exceptional film, and probably the best, for me.
Blade runner was the best sci fi film for me. I remember seeing it when I was about 14 (long time ago!) and although I stil love sci fi films, this one remains the best for me.

Glad to see most of you agree with me Blade Runner is still coming out 'tops'..Nice to hear some of the old ones mentioned like Westworld,,there were a few from the 70's that had great style ,,Omega man and Logans Run a couple more I remember, might look a bit dated now though..Funny no one's mentioned 2001 a space oddessy,,a bit boring but very stylish to look at I remember.....As for recent sci-fi films,,they are all good in part but never the complete item for me ,,examples 'The Island' 'I Robot' and 'A I' ........
You know I found it a bit slow to say the least.
Question Author
DMA,,Of course you are entitled to your opinion,,but if it's Blade Runner you are saying is a bit slow, that's like saying the non sci-fi film Taxi Driver is slow! Give it another go,,not the directors cut ,but the original,,take in the whole atmosphere, the music /the way it's filmed/and even the special effects, which were quite ahead of there time, and were not so ''in your face''as more recent movies,,on the other hand if it's 2001 A Space Oddessy you were talking about ,I agree 100%..

I've seen things you wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."
- Roy Batty in "Blade Runner

My favourite quote from any sci fi film !!

Im not saying its crap, just a bit slow. For its time it was new stuff, but drags a bit.
