my brother is in austrailia, we just text him as normal hope this helps
Don't know about NZ but when I'm in Europe if the numbers in my 'phone I just text/call as normal and it 'knows'!!
If I need to call a number not in my 'phone then I have to do the 0044 thing - try it when you get there - or just buy a local NZ SIM and email everyone your new number!
PS you may get more responses if you post this in the 'Travel' or 'Internet & technology' sections.
