There's a programme starting shortly about the lovely summer of 1976 on Ch 5 if anyone's interested. There have been a few progs about mega cold winters so it's good to see one about a hot summer. I`m recording it for posterity.

It wasn't nice working outside. Too hot.

I was at school and played in the fields all summer. Must have been awful in the city. We were threatened with having our water cut off though.
I was in London………. So hot .
Ah yes, that was back in the days when politicians really got things moving. It only took Denis Howell three days in the job as Minister for Drought before he got it to rain ;-)

Some interesting photos here:

I remember being told that we shouldn't have more than 3" of water in the bath. To this day, I don't waste water.
Think I'll watch Monalbano? Try and catch it on 'catch-up' presuming 5 do it.
Loved it , yet it really only lasted 18 days uninterrupted

Well done, 237SJ!

As far as I remember, our heatwave started in the Whitsun school holidays. I might be wrong, it was a long time ago. In Devon the water was cut off and stand pipes were installed. Luckily, our village was a bit outlaying and by the time the water company got around to us, the drought had just ended which was good timing.
I'm watching the Isle of Wight Festival. Certainly different to Glastonbury.
My 1st child was born Nov. '75. I'm here to tell you that the summer of '75 was pretty hot as well! Combination of pregnancy and heat brought my 1st ever migraine. :(
She was, as you've worked out, small but becoming active that summer. It was a nightmare to keep her cool and quite spoiled my enjoyment of the heat - which I could manage then. Loved it all. :)
Seemed like more than 18 days. + it's 20 degrees cooler in Newcastle.
Just going what what was said on JV in the week Spicey , I was amazed too ;0)

jourdain - yes I remember 1975 was hot as well. Everyone tends to forget that because that summer was eclipsed by 1976
Ahh swimming in the open air pool at Tynemouth ;0)
I loved it though it was more humid than sunny. 1975 was better in terms of sun. I could do with some of the 'heatwave' they keep banging on about on the weather. No sun again today til 4.00 p.m. feeling a bit shortchanged. I just want to sit out and read my book.
Remember it well - the long hot Summer of '76 - first trip to Vancouver in the Fall and, referring to post by Itsme7, that's when my heart started beating faster seeing someone I hadn't seen for 6 years.

Just watching it now. I wonder if they will mention the invasion of ladybirds that caused people to run off in all directions from Woolacombe beach?
Memories -The tar on the roads melted every day and we left the curtains drawn all day. Everything dried up. Went swimming in the North Sea one hot evening wearing a sundress to cool down before driving back to home in Hertfordshire. Didn't bother to dry off first. When the first rain came everyone ran out of their houses down our road and ran around in it. Went to Greece in September and everything was green in contrast to our baked brown countryside!! Horrible hot summer!!!

Even though I was in my 20's, I don't remember it at all !
