Mercifully, Jodie Whittaker is stepping down as Doctor Who. Phew! To succeed her would you prefer a man, a woman, or a transgender or other form of gender?

In fairness Chris, Peter Capaldi was 55 when he got the role. The oldest Doctor since William Hartnell.

Seems to me that, since Jodie Whitaker took the role, it's established that Gallifreyan gender is variable.

And, besides, imagine imposing human gender norms on a fictional alien race!

I dont think its a gender issue, Jodie just wasnt mysterious or quirky enough and, as others have said, the plots were banal. I dont see the need for the sidekicks to be "celebrities" in their own right either.

I agree with that CAC, this thing with casting well known actors in companion roles is a little grating. Sometimes it works (Catherine Tate and Matt Lucas, while terrible on paper, both worked really well) but I prefer The Doctor to be the focal point of the show, not the companion.

A woman ought not have got the role because the role was a male character and always was. It was PC nonsense that changed the sex of "the master" first, allowing the same to occur to "the doctor" at a later point. It's utter gibberish; once a character in a story has been defined it's wrong to go messing about with it for antisocial reasons. I'm sure Jodie did the best possible with the role (the storylines I saw were not the best) but that didn't make it right nor enhance the series.

As for who plays the role next, I feel a piece of nostalgia has been tarnished and I'm finding it difficult to care much any more. Cast a gibbon in the role if you like.

Even on Earth, different species do "sex" and "gender" in wildly different ways. It's naive to assume that the human model, whatever your understanding of it, to be the only model.

Besides, given all the other rules it breaks (of physics in particular), why get so het up about this one?

Why Phew? I thought she did really well given the awfulness of the scripts and stories. the person who ought to go is Chris Chibnall. I can absolutely see why she is leaving...I'd be saying "I can't deal with anymore of this load of substandard toot" and I'd be off too. I thought the covid video she did was first class.

The last series of Doctor Who was very good and Whittaker was excellent. Totally disproved and the part is for a man brigade. Now that nonsense has been dealt with, anyone who is a good actor can be cast, and bodes well for the future.

I agree that the Doctor should be an older person. They should be seen as knowledgeable and wise, not youthful and perky.
Helen Mirren would be a great Doctor. Or Stephen Fry. But I suspect both are too busy.
