Last night, on late night LBC radio a certain presenter referred to the President of the United States as that "ORANGE APE who lives in the White House" (obviously the orange refers to his skin tone)

Would he have been allowed to refer to the last President in a similar a way?

I think not, he would have been sacked on the spot and rightly so, so why has there been no outcry over this?

No, the comments about Trump were not meant to be complimentary, nor is any particular reference to simians unless it's complimenting on climbing skills possibly.
It seems to have been widely covered, AOG - 58 questions on Brexit from yourself alone!

Trouble is, Trumps skin is a constant (ok it may go from tangerine to satsuma now and again, depending on his mood). Brexit is a developing story.
archibaldy at 10:32, I agree. So is it acceptable to call a white man an ape, and if it isn't why is it wrong to object?
Luckily for that presenter, apes have no voice, otherwise he’d be toast ;-)
The bottom line is, as I said earlier. It's Mr Trump so anything goes. Yes aog, it is double standards.

/// Monkey and ape references are slurs towards blacks and not
whites. ///

Could it be that they have chosen to take offence, we have been calling our kids "little monkeys" for years?

Apart from that what about Ginger haired people, fat people et etc?

I remember a bald player who played for Brentford, when they played against certain teams, boy did he take some stick, especially when he headed a muddy ball, which made laughable marks on his bald head.

I believe that if these black players ignored the taints from a minority of yobs, the uncouth yobs would soon get fed up, just like all bullies do when they find that they are not having the effect that they crave for.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but calling never hurts me."
All humans are apes. We're great ones.
When comparing a white man to an ape there is no confusion whether this has anything to do with the fact that they are dark skinned like apes - skin colour is a sensitive subject, and also they look like they may have African heritage, and monkeys are associated with Africa.

It's usually more about intellectual capacity or physical characteristics unrelated to skin colour or ancestral heritage which for historical reasons are regarded as fairer game for comparison.
The most intelligent of the apes is indeed the Orange Hung Utan.
Maybe we should all be a bit more like Ray Davis:
AOG I'm not sure it's about choosing to take offence, the monkey chants and throwing bananas is quite obviously meant to give offence - it's what football supporters do to opposing teams after all, wind them up and jeer at them. Whether the player ignores it or doesn't see/hear it doesn't mean that the intent wasn't there and it's purely based at black players because of their dark skin and association with Africa.

Gingers/bald people may also take offence, some may not but these characteristics don't have a direct link to race or racism which lets be fair quite has a few bad things attributed to it over the years.

Is having a black skin and any association with Africa, something to be ashamed about?

Being discriminated against or receiving physical harm because one is black is obviously a no, no, but name calling really?
Naomi is right, trump is an easy target, thanks to his own doing . He’s the gift that keeps on giving. Best not start an op on ‘males with small hands ‘ !!!
I think ‘orange’ refers to his obviously fake tan, and ‘ape’ to his seemingly low intelligence. Obama wouldn’t have been described as such as he is neither orange-coloured nor unintelligent.

Not by me, but you are linking two matters together to try and make one.

My attack on you for being rude by shortening my username so as to insult me, is not tied to the argument between myself and Andy Hughes because I chose to call him by his surname, which isn't insulting at all.

THECORBYLOON

Perhaps in future you would take offence at calling you THECORBYLOONEY?
The point is that I'm not the one saying folk should ignore insults whilst at the same time being insulted by the word "git".

You don't practise what you preach.

It usually is insulting to call someone by their surname, aog. The point of it is to "talk down" to someone. Do you do it in real-life to people's faces? I agree, you should pay attention to what others prefer, if you would like them to do the same for you.
"You're allowed to criticise the choices people make about their appearance."

Really? Let's leave aside the "ape" epithet to avoid confusion. Let's suppose the previous President had sported dreadlocks (entirely under his control). Supposing he had been referred to as a "dreadlocked buffoon"?
