I thought it was an exceptional film and heart breaking at the end. It certainly took you away from the noble warrior ethos that so many films attempt to portray when dealing with indiginous populations struggling to maintain their heritage in a modern world. My former girlfriend swears she dated the actress who played the mother, but actresses are born liars aren't they?
I saw it recently and I have to say that by the end I felt very numb, I wasn't sure what I was supposed to feel, of course I cried my way through most of the movie. I think though that it was a powerful movie but couldn't recommend it to anyone because I just found it too harsh and upsetting but maybe I am just being a girl!! I also think that actually it could have been set in any poor area of the world and the main story didn't really have a lot to do with the Maori "struggle" in particular, like I say it could have been set elsewhere easily.
