Existence, mmm?

What's the point?

Now, let me qualify that:

I've been through all the "life begets life" and the "the meaning of existence is reproducing itself" stuff...

AND the only reason i've bothered to bother is the ceaseless drumming of the impotent war-bongos between those of us who do and don't believe in a higher bloody being.

Give it to me straight - lets go all oscar wilde on this (d'ya see what i did there?!) give up your epigrams and craplets and couplets and limericks on WHY WE ARE HERE!

(and no boring ********)

(please)

love and hugs

Existence mmm?  whats the point?

Well I suppose the first question is are you sure you exist and that you are not a figment of somebody elses imagination.

ermm, well "said", squeb. congrats for that...
Sounds like you need the answers to life. Suggest you get yurself on an ALPHA course. They take place all over the UK, run for 12 weeks (1 evening a week), are free of charge, no tie -ins or tricks, and most start with (free) meal each week.
Question Author

aah, mr brennan

thanks for your answer; am well familiar with the alpha course and am a mid-key methodist personally.

doesn't stop me asking!

any personal thoughts without reverting to standard text, sir?

Indeed the question is fundamental, pity more people dont stop to ask it, and then try genuinely try to find some answers. Going a little deeper, I guess the fact that there is such a question ' whats the point?' would lead to a fairly natural assumption that there must be 'a point'.

Hope you dont mind me asking, What is a mid-key methodist, and what do you mean by standard text?

Question Author

i think we may talk the same language, sir!

i agree entirely that the question is there to be asked.

mid-key means i am less fanatical than my sisters.

and "standard text" refers to the usual kerfuffle which goes on whenever religion is mentioned on the Answer Bank. The bandying around of standard arguments and usual speech: a long-drawn tide on this untidy beach...

Hi Trillipse,  Yeah you did sorry about that, but you know and I know that the answer to your question boils down to what does someone believe and as that is individual to each and every person based their past experiences and to some extent I suppose their expectations for what comes after.
Question Author
and this insight prevents you from enlightening us re: shedding your individual light on things, qapmoc ?

OK, you are less fanatical than your sisters. Therefore you are fanatical, to some degree. What are you fanatical about?

Also, am curious about 'sisters' - how do you mean 'sisters'?

Hope I am doing OK so far in avoiding standard text.

But what I believe wont make any difference to what you believe so whats the point but it might make all the extremists around here have a go at me so praps I should keep quite, but for me all these questions/comments about PURPOSE have no meaning you just got to get from birth to death in the best way you can, same as all the animal kingdom we descended from really.  If you want to believe in higher purpose and it gives you support, then fine.   The funny thing is that although I think that belief in God etc.. is a waste of time the actual institutions of the church in all its various forms actually is good for society as a whole and gives a stablising effect to cultures, after all the Christians and Muslims and others have been following the same rules for 2000 years.
Question Author

qapmoc!

now THAT's the kind of answer i was after!

fair play to you!

i like your style

qapmoc

how did we descend from the animal kingdom?, dont tell me we descended from the chimps!......if we did, how come there are still chimps. From my experience people put all manner of objections to God/faith and subscribe to the evolution theory because they know if they did have belief in God and had faith, they would have to do something about it - and stand up for their faith. But thats just it, you have to have faith to believe in something you cant see!

Question Author
oh john, john, john. . .  .   .    .      .
Trillipse I just knew somebody would do something like that.

Hi John, note that I said what I believe wont effect what you believe and just accept that it is visa-versa also

Regards

qapmoc

I'm not sure you can say that religion has been a stabilising influence on society when it seems to me that  all wars, if not started for reasons of greed, then are started because of religious differences. The amount of prejudice that is inflicted in the name of religion can hardly be called stabilising either.

John

Why can't believe in God and Darwin.

Question Author

gathorne!

are you the only other person in the blinking world who thinks god and darwinism aren;t mutually exclusive!

we should get together and form some sort of group...

Hi gathorne, yes agreed to some extent, but humans fight because there are too many in one space, religion is only the simplest thing to blame, I am sure that if religions didnt exist they would fight because their neighbours are taller or have more fish or whatever.

I did mean stability in a cultural way in that many generations of a society use the same standards/rules to function.
