How do I stop my Apple 5 iphone from opening emails automatically please. They open as they arrive in my inbox - in the middle of texting and when I am talking on the phone which mutes the call until I close the email. I have obviously updated something which has made this happen, but what?

Turn off notifications for Mail in Settings

I have done what you said and it works but.... I am now not getting a bleep noise when I have mail/text nor a number by the app on the main screen. I dont now know I have mail/text unless I open the relevant screen.

The various options in the notifications should do what you want, you'll need to experiment, I 'think' setting them to 'banners' should do the pop up at the top of the screen but not interrupt what you are doing
