Anyone else agree with me that the final result was rigged in favour of current shows because of the massive criticism the channel has been rightly getting in recent years for loading its airtime with lightweight pap, Just read the results in the final list, of course it all comes down to individual taste, but the end result just baffles me...touch of frost better than the sweeney or inspector morse...ant and decs saturday show at no2 of all time, laughable.. and classic shows such as world in action, brideshead, jewel in the crown the world at war and upstairs downstairs way down the list, while total and utter rubbish like footballers wifes is considered ''greater'' than an all time classic like the sweeney..

Just a thought . . . I wonder if the majority of people who voted were of a younger age group who were just too young to remember the classic shows?
They ask present-day ITV viewers to vote. What do you THINK is going to happen? And who cares anyway? It's not like Footballer's Wives is now officially better than The Sweeney and nobody's allowed to think otherwise, is it?
what was the number one?  was it footballers tarts?
It seems to be the same in any poll that is conducted - they did one for songs of the Millenium and Robbie Williams had 2 in the top 10 - not saying they weren't good songs, but would both the songs have been there if they hadn't been hits in the previous couple of years? As ceebee007 said above, often younger people tend to vote, and it's human nature to be enthusiastic about what you are seeing now rather than 10, 20 or more years ago. And I reckon half the appeal of these poll programmes is that we can get indignant at the omissions and inclusions!

''They ask present-day ITV viewers to vote. What do you THINK is going to happen?''...

And present day viewers where not alive in the 1960s, 70s or 80s where they..give us a break, i'm in my 30s and i can remember plenty of those classic shows and they are all repeated enough and widely available on dvd and video....and no it does not matter a jot..in the long term..but i get highly suspicious when shows as crap as ant and decs saturday night takeaway and footballers wifes are so high up the list...viewers vote, tv execs fix i say...

most chart shows will always feature a bias toward the more recent material.people tend to vote for what is freshest in their mind rather than really thinking about it.

Ultimately, it's all about opinions, although I agree about ITV being generally crap these days - Z-list celebrities eating kangaroo testicles for our entertainment , for goodness sake. The whole show was of course a massive exercise in ITV slapping itself on the back.

The number one, Immortal? Not exactly a surprise result. I'll give you a clue - Manchester-based soap opera, been going since 1960, features a pub called the Rovers' Return. No more hints now! :-)
