Spelling Police....

I am not a fan of the spelling and grammar police who pick holes in posts. I am guilty of typos, spelling and grammatical errors as much as the next ABer; as long as the meaning is clear then I tend to let it go.

I've just seen a post on Facebook where a proud Mum has announced that her son has started his first job. Amongst all the congratulatory messages a family member has posted "Were so proud!" My immediate thought was " OMG, what has the young guy done to let you down so soon?" I then twigged........

It's amazing how a trivial typo can completely change the nature of the message!

Wouldn't say their my favourites, but I find my teeth grinding when i see "would of/ could of/should of" instead of using the correct "would have/could have/should have" trivial I know, but I find it irritating none the less.

Oh and "loose" and "lose"

I must admit that I have to say certain words over to work out which variation is correct advise/advise, effect/affect sort of words.

I hate people who end a story/post with "just saying". I have no idea why it annoys me, but it does.

I hate it when it see focusing spelled focussing. And you see it all the time, even in newspapers where you would expect a reasonably high standard of literacy!

Oh and the amount of people that spell appalled as appauled is, well, appalling!

No worries Corby, id have (of?) done the same, kicking myself for mis typing it. That's probably why i grind my teeth at typos instead of pointing 'em out as im bound to have made faux pas whilst doing it!

I always thought focusing or focussing was optional with both correct, personally leaning to the double s as I thought the single s was an americanism..

Why don't companies have their notices proof read by someone literate?
There's a difference between typos and poor grammar, the list is huge but here are my favourite gripes.

Any misused apostrophe, if you can't use one, don't use one.
Our/are
Of/have
Their/there

Shops advertising sale prices as "up to 50%" when in reality they mean "up to 50 % off" and their prices are actually from 50%.

Shops which advertise something as 2.49p when they mean £2.49(p), the p is wrong but more understandable.

Had a quick look through and can't find any typos etc.

Lend/ borrow, used to drive me mad at the chalkface, "Can I lend a ruler Miss?" "Yes, to whom do you wish to lend it? Note the preposition is not at the end of the sentence" Their little brows were very furrowed.

I hate providing instead of provided. But then I also hate methinks, because it belongs back in the middle ages, or at least somewhere other than now. It really sets my teeth on edge.
