I was in an argument with a friend who said the song, "Every breath you take", By the Police, was about soccer. They said they got this information from a vh1 special which i have come to realize are always wrong. What is the the widely accepted meaning of this song? Or has Sting never disclosed it?

I was always under the impression that Sting wrote it about his first wife when they split up/got divorced.  I can't see what the lyrics would have to do with soccer!

Thats what i thought, but she said she saw it on some mtv special or something. I think he was joking and she didnt catch the wit but it made me angry because she acted like "how could i possibly not know it wasnt about soccer". I also heard he said it was about the cold war and oppressive governments..... Maybe he is just giving everyone the run around.
Sammy is right the lyric is clearly about him having lost the woman he loves.

Oddly funny she misinterpreted the word stalker for soccer.... I just realized that must have been it.
I agree with Sammy Snake I thought Sting wrote it for Frances Tomelty the actress who was his wife then.
i thought that it was about stalking myself
The stalking song by the police was "Don't Stand So Close To Me"
