Manga style cartoon from 80's - do you remember it?

<P dir=ltr style="MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px">Could anyone provide me with any info about a cartoon from the 80's probably in the manga style, or perhaps similar to the animation in Belle and Sebastian. It may have been a one off film or mini-series. It concerned a story of a boy who travelled (in a spaceship with his family?) and eventually they met a scientist (with a red baseball cap?) and there was a scene with giant wasps and one of them put his stinger in the boys head. I think it then turned out that the scientist was the boy and he wore the hat to cover the hole in his head.
