My friend is wondering what to get her 18yr old grandson (in June) that will be something to keep as a special gift for his milestone birthday. I've come up with engraved tankard or watch or something like that but she'd like more ideas. Thought I would ask you guys on here as I know you usually come up with the answers. I think she would like to spend about £50 (give or take a bit). Thanks in advance for your help.

What are his hobbies?
No disprespect meant, but I think a tankard is perceived as a bit old fashioned now as they are rarely used and unlikely to be displayed. I usually buy 'age' presents from the Tiffany website, it's a well known and respected brand without being 'fashionable' and you can get some nice silver keyrings with footballs / golf club / etc to match a hobby or perhaps for longer term a money clip or tie pin. Failing that idea, how about cufflinks ? Alternatively, because the younger generation don't seem to 'keep' things in the same way, how about an experience - maybe driving a ferrari or a rally car or even a hot air balloon ride.

His hobbies vary but he is into biking is it BMX where they do tricks etc..not up on this one I'm afraid? I agree LDC that a tankard is old fashioned it's just something that came to mind as a first thought. I think his parents will be getting him an "experience" thing and I don't think my friend would consider that anyway. I will have a look at this Tiffany site though, I've never seen that one before thanks.
Perhaps not to everyone's taste, but a signet ring is something which he could wear for ever.
does he drive?

If not, how about a block set of driving lessons?

No he doesn't drive yet but I think she said he may not be able to because the cost of car insurance was into a few thousand (and no car anyway)!! Sounds mad to me but I think it is something like that for youngsters now.
Tiffanys is the famous jewellers (blue box / white ribbon) www.tiffany.co.uk - there is some seriously expensive jewellery on there, but also some more realistic keyrings etc
If he likes BMX could you get any signed memorabilia by someone who is current in this field ?
