Oh jesus it gets better- just seen that no one was even disciplined and the soldiers who ran it were later decorated by the queen!!

Amazing
Different story I know, but I'm reminded of the Private Eye cover with the Rock of Gibraltar and several masked soldiers on it with the caption 'why did you shoot those IRA suspects 16 times?' 'we ran out of bullets'
Question Author
Just finished the film karen - had half an idea what went on and obviously knew it was really awfulbut watching them just go round corners and shoot people who were running away and take lives like that is just beyone comprehension

To then be decorated from the queen is just shocking!
Many young men are dead in the ground and the "murderers" free to live their life. Wifes mums left alone , people fatherless! Uurgh its just shocking. Planting things on dead bodies and no one brought to justice.

Cant believe it x
Sorry, going to disagree with you all on this one.

Saville was a one sided inquiry which had no other intention of scapegoating the soldiers of 1Para to ensure the continued peace in Northern Ireland. Evidence was selective as were witnesses, the inquiry glossed over many of the fundamental issues that were key to what happenned in 1972.

One simple question, if trouble wasn't expected why were 1 Para sent into Bogside that day and why were they ordered in with LIVE ammunition. It's easy to blame the Colonel in charge for disobeying orders but the reality is the Intelligence Services knew there was a potential flashpoint in Bogside that Sunday, it's pretty widely acknowledged that a young Martin McGuiness was there with a sub machine gun. I am sceptical of any inquiry that's closed and done on the sponsorship of a particular government, especially a snivelling rat like Blair!!

Our armed services did what they had to do to prevent the loss of a greater number of lives throughout the troubles, over 3600 people died at the hands of the paramilitaries on both side of the religious divide. Until it happens close to you, you don't understand just how important a job our servicemen do.
> Sorry, going to disagree with you all on this one.

You're perfectly entitled to disagree with people!

But why on earth do you feel the need to apologise for it?

What exactly are you sorry for...
Figure of speech...nothing else
Question Author
Just CANNOT justify the shooting of unarmed civillians slapshot.

Just cant- hence the apology..... Shooting unarmed 17yr olds no threat to a heavily armed army.

Shocking
> Sorry, going to disagree with you all on this one.

Nope, it comes across like you're ashamed for daring to have a mind of your own, or for having formed your opinion.

If you begin a statement by apologising for it, then it's worthless...

The way they were shooting it a wonder no women and children were killed too....
"British Prime Minister David Cameron addressed the House of Commons that afternoon where he acknowledged, among other things, that the paratroopers had fired the first shot, had fired on fleeing unarmed civilians, and shot and killed one man who was already wounded.[5] He then apologised on behalf of the British Government"

Shot for nothing....
Read it as you will, you're choice mate, doesn't change my opinion.

Tinks - In any situation there is no justification for shooting unarmed people, point is when 1 Para were sent into Bogside that day they had no idea who was or wasn't armed, see my comment about McGuiness.

In simple terms they should never have been there. Had the scenario been turned and a few squaddies been shot we'd have a had a news bulletin and a story in the paper, end of discussion. This scenario happened many many times and while our armed forces go through the grist mill for politcal ends, these terrorists were given pardons for a peace process.

Saville was a way of enhancing the Good Friday Agreement.
> you're choice mate

Well, thanks very much! I'm sure you're pretty choice yourself and, whilst I'm flattered, I like girls! To use your favourite expression, sorry...
