Demons souls question

Okay so in demons souls in 1-4 just after the penetrator boss there is a room with three archers, after you kill them you need to kill these three glowing red dudes, I killed the first one with no trouble. But the one with the huge shield and massive spear mace thing seems to keep breaking all my equips... How can I stop this, I would have no trouble killing him if he didn't keep breaking all my god damn equipment. Pleeeease someone has to know something, can I avoid him breaking my gear some how?
