In Star Wars Empire Strikes Back, Princess Leila says to Han Solo  'Why, you stuck up...half-witted...scruffy-looking nerf-herder!' ...

What is a 'nerf'? It is a real animal? The only thing I know about the word is that its the name of the Band who did the theme tune to Buffy and I'm guessing they got their inspiration from Star Wars...!
