The vicar's wife "taking" the baby clothes one of the parishioners had donated for a jumble sale. She gave them to Paddy's girlfriend for the baby, but it's theft, surely...?!

I know it's not real, but still...

on Emmerdale btw !!!
Start of taking a few clothes and maybe end up robbing a bank somewhere. The road to hell is paved with good intentions in soapland.
A "donation" was mentioned, but I agree, it's somehow dishonest to cream off all the best stuff before the rest of the parishioners have a sight of it.
I think in the real world the person donating the clothes would be pleased that someone was using the clothes. Mind you, I would have expected the vicar's wife to make some sort of donation....
I think that the vicar's wife would see it as a charitable act.
As long as a donation was given to the cause/ charity it`s ok. This sort of thing goes on a lot in charity shops/ jumble sales etc
a friend of mine used to be assitant manager in a charity shop and told me no end of times about the clothes she used to get from there before they went on sale, and she got 25% off as well!
I would think this sort of thing goes on at jumble sales throughout the land. It probably goes on at some charity shops too.
Re Gina's answer, I worked voluntarily at 2 charity shops for years, one you got pick of donations, but manager had to price them, the other you could only buy from the shop, (with 5% off AFTER you'd worked 3 months)
bagpuss, obviously different people work different ways
maybe it was because she was part of the management they thought they deserved to get it
