Anyone watch Midsomer last night?
At the end, Barnaby told the young couple who wanted to get married - "go ahead, you are not closely related". How can that be then if their mothers were sisters and mans father was a brother ?? What exactly is their relationship then?

I think that might be cousins, but I suppose it depends on what you consider to be closely related. I think that is close enough to worry about but not illegal. Any children would be twice as likely to inherit defects, but apart from that I suppose it is all right.
Sorry - rethink. Does that mean the brother and sister have inadvertently got married and produced offspring - that would be a bit different I think, but cannot work out what relationship that would be.
It was confusing.

My enjoyment was greatly enhanced by spotting the Arabs, after the recent race furore.
Last week there was a black man.
Can't wait to see who pops up next.
She was Neil Pearson's daugher. His wife was her step mother. No relation at all.
The Bingham’s daughter Maggie Viviani had a son, Ben. Their other daughter Selina Stanton had a daughter Verity. These two were thus first cousins and were the couple who wished to marry.

Whilst I would disagree with the new DCI Barnaby’s contention that the two were not “closely related” first-cousin marriage is not illegal in the UK. About 1% of marriages overall are cousin marriages, but this rises to more than 50% amongst some of the UK’s Asian population, most notably those of Pakistani origin where I believe the incidence is about 60%.
Verity was Selina's STEP daughter.
Actually, Francis, I think you're correct and I'm completely wrong. (I knew I should not have had that last glass of Shiraz!).

Of course, had I been compos mentis I should have realised that the daughter and her step-mother were not too fond of each other and that's sometimes (though not always) a clue!

Apologies.
Im sure the new Mrs Barnaby was the wife of the cop played by Jason Durr in Heartbeat. She was a lawyer. Am I right ?
Correct.
