My cat always looks so miserable, how do I know if he is happy? He does all the usual cat-things ie bully me, attack me, wake me up during the night for food etc....but he always looks so glum.

sounds like hes a happy chap if hes doing all his usual stuff, must be that he just has one of those faces, you know like some humans who always look miserable even when their not!!!

At least with a dog you get something that looks like a smile. I can tell when George is upset about something - his teeth are usually in my hand. Other than that - who knows.

Cats cannot smile, but does he ever lie down and purr?

Usually you'll know if they are not happy.
Mine get pretty loud when they are hungry for example!

Bohne - the only reason that I am up this early is that my 'angel' fell off the bed (he is getting old and leaping onto the bed is like climbing a mountain these days), when he got up he sat beside me and loudly screamed in my ear for food. It was a very loud "wah".

I went down stairs to feed him, he wandered down and watched me putting the meat in his bowl - then he turned around and was back in his corner of my bed before I got up stairs. Now he is sleeping and I am wide awake.

How can he not be happy - he has a slave who loves him and sees to his every need. He just pads around his cat-dom all day looking superior and brave.

cats that are not happy with their living arrangments will soon find somewhere else to live and be pampered so be assured your cat is happy
He obviously is happy, but boy you are right he doesn't half look cheesed off! LOL
mine is aka demon cat, but i think she's happy she spends most of her time either sleeping or winding me up plus all of of the above in your post, i'm convinced that behind the glum exterior she is actually laughing her socks of at me, espcially when she gets me up in the middle of the night to chase round the house after a mouse, but wouldn't be without her!
george lovely but yes looks glum!!
