got no info to prove, but I seem to remember seeing metal Knight of the Road badges on car bumpers / grilles in the early 60's - similar to original RAC / AA badges.

ok dreamcatcher, a bit more info courtesy of a very kind & knowledgable chap called Jim & confirmed by an equally generous fella called Derek.

Re: Knight of the road

Johan There are two different generations of this organization. The "Knights of the Road Guild" is the earlier version. It is much heavier with a blue enamel ribbon under a domed blue enamel centre, a flat back and came in three styles base or stud mount, grille mount with two long threaded bolts fixed to the rear and tab (badge bar) mount. The earlier badges are all numbered "N.O.W." and a set of numbers. The later version, "the Order of the Knights of the Road", was issued in the 1960s. It was pressed, available in tab (badge bar) mount only and featured a knights profile in chrome and blue enamel ribbon. The later badges are all numbered in series beginning with "A . . . B . . . C . . ." and up to a four digit number.

Each badge was issued on the merit of a nomination made to the newspaper by one of its readers in recognition of an act of kindness on the road. The recipient of the badge was also given a letter from the paper, a lapel pin that matched the badge and a certificate.

Hope this is of some help.
