I don't know the answer, but there's glue.. and there's glue!

the stuff they sell in school shouldn't be of any lethal variety.
In a shop it is normally 18 but there are exceptions, it depends how you interpret the law, here is a section from
the supply of of goods law (UK).

The law prohibits the supply of solvents to people under 18yrs, when the supplier knows or has reasonable cause to believe the substance is likely to be used for the purpose of intoxication. The law also prohibits the supply of cigarette lighter refill canisters containing butane to a person under 18yrs.

In both cases, it is pritt stick glue.
I would guess that ''Pritt Stick'' is harmless as far as solvents are concerned so I don't think there can be
any legal reason why a responsible young teenager should not be able to buy it, I have never heard of anybody
that goes around sniffing Pritt Sticks, but I guess there's a first for everything..

when i was 15, i tried buying some from my corner shop and they asked my age and i said '15' and they said 'sorry you're not old enough'.

but people as young as 13 can buy it from my school.
18 is the answer - but only if the shop believes it may be going to be misused.

I would guess the shop doesn't trust its staff to know which glues contain sufficient solvent - or to judge the likely use - so adopts a blanket policy just in case.
I was refused buying alcohol because my 17 year old daughter didn't have ID. How stupid is that?
Question Author
meh! that doesn't make sense. why?
Because you could have been buying it for her. Tesco has the same policy.
It will be because the salesperson suspected it was for her. And if she had id it would have been the same answer because she would still have been u18 (unless the concern was that she wasn't your daughter rather than her actual age - in which case id might have helped).
I agree with that but I'd also boought everything I needed for a family meal and more. Plus she was in her PJ's so it's not like she was going out to party. Plus I would never share my wine...
Sky...she only looks about 14 if that.

I went mad anyway.
My daughter got asked for ID when she was trying to buy Bonjela for a mouth ulcer ( she is 28 )
In Sainsburys it is over 18 for any solvent based glue.
BTW,if you are any age don't try buying glue AND a packet of crisps at the same time.
Can't think why?ask me and I will tell you.
I still keep getting ID'd for cigarettes and I'm 31 in a few weeks!

Mr Veritas, you have intrigued me!
Well Jenna,
Since you seem to be the only intrigued person I will tell you.
Most if not all crisp packets are now made of a type of foil.
If you open the packet and throw away the crisps, the empty packet makes(it seems) a perfect recepticle for glue for the sniffing of!
You live and learn.

Well you learn something new everyday!

Thank you Mr Veritas :)
