My daughter works for a local convenience store. It has Paypoint. A customer asked for a 10 Vodaphone top up voucher. My daughter accidentally pressed the 40 button and instead of cancelling it she confirmed it. She still has the voucher, after giving the customer A 10 one. Her employers are now saying she has to repay the 40. Yes we do realise it was careless but these things do happen - human error and all that. She hasn't got 40 to spare. Are they within their rights to ask for the money back? Seems a bit harsh to me.

Any replies would be appreciated. Thank you.

as long as it says in her contract that they have the right to deduct money to make up for shortfalls or mistakes then Yes they can. (though only upto 10% of her wages on any one payday)

Sorry but do you expect the shop to be 40 out of pocket due to your daughters mistake?

Though she can then keep the voucher as she has paid for it, so if she can sell it she will get her 40 back.
Was it a VOUCHER or a TOP-UP If she confirmed it, then the customer who had the 10 voucher got 50 worth of top-up for 10 so the shop could say he owes them 40 but if it was a voucher then it could well end up with her paying unless the shop can return it to Vodaphone and get 4x10 vouchers in exchange. If all that makes sense to you. Also what chuck says is right once she has paid the 40 the voucher is hers.
there is a code number on the voucher (top right) for refunding through the top-up machine. Operator to do within 24h or ring company with details for refund.

Thank you for your replies. Very helpful. Tamborine, you were correct and she has got the 40 refunded and also a few brownie points from her boss for taking the initiative to get it sorted. Thanks again.
