And the word is?... what?... "knuckle-dragger"?
"Down with this sort of thing."

"Careful now."
You forgot "mind how you go".

Alright let's explain why we're taking the proverbial.

This country doesn't bang out nails made by unskilled workers any more.

Our foreign earnings come largely from what used to be called "invisible exports" - service sector jobs. I'm one - I work for a large American software company. They have to buy pounds to pay my salary.

The Uk's ability to do this sort of thing rests on it's ability to recruit the best people wherever they come from.

In my team alone we have an Australian, an Italian, a Spaniard, an Indian and a South African, as well as 4 native Brits.

Without the ability to recruit from abroad we would not be able to function and i'd probably have to go and work abroad.

It's called Globalisation - get used to it - it's not going away.

The other factor is population demographics. The UK is the only country in Europe with a slightly rising population. Without immigration it would be falling.

A falling population would mean that in about 10 years time retired people would outnumber those working with devestating effects on the economy.

Think it's tough getting a plumber now!

So if you want to improve the country don't go round shouting slogans, go to night school!
I'm sure British workers will get the jobs if they are good enough. If they're not good enough the jobs will go to others. Simple fact of life.

'british jobs for british workers' sounds like a BNP slogan.
if it wasnt for eastern european imports where would we go to get the car badly washed?

what if it was a bnp slogan ? i now will be voting bnp from now on,instead of labour, look at the mess blair got us into.....!!

jake ur talking balls !! the whole point of what im saying is that these contractors/employers will go for the eastern european before a british national, simply to cut wages !!! if the employers cannot find british people to do the jobs then i have no problems with non british nationals gaining employment here...just as there is a shortage of british staff/nurses working for nhs..fair play!!

does anyone have the gumtion to back me up here ,and not run from critisism from nethanderals on this site?
Actually Soicobot I agree with you.

It would be different if they couldn't find the (skilled) workers they needed for the oil refinery but there is enough local skill to fill the job void. They just wanted cheeper labour.

I won't go sa far as to say I would vote BNP but I would vote for the party that were going to look closely at plugging the skills gap, possibly by 'encouraging' the ******** back to training and work.

exactly cassa...well said..glad someone has the balls to agree,,,i have never thought about voting bnp but i would vote more right wing next time around,,definately not labour,,labour have went soft on everything except taxes !! im in no way a racist...wot im saying is if they cannot fill the jobs with british people then fill them with non british....it had to come to this eventually and i could see things getting worse...these poles etc just make a mockery of our soft system, half the bloody eastern block are also claiming the dole whilst working...its a damn discrace !!!!!!!!!!!
Question Author
see jake the joke didnt put his oar in again anyway........ and as for twenty.."british jobs for british workers"...a famous gordon brown quote/dribble !!
"half the bloody eastern block are also claiming the dole whilst working"

How can you verify this?
British jobs for British workers may be a BNP slogan but it was also Gordon Brown's, unfortunately.

"As we set out on the next stage of our journey this is our vision: Britain leading the global economy - by our skills and creativity, by our enterprise and flexibility, by our investment in transport and infrastructure - a world leader in science; a world leader in financial and business services; a world leader in energy and the environment from nuclear to renewables; a world leader in the creative industries; and, yes, modern manufacturing too; drawing on the talents of all to create British jobs for British workers."
- 24/9/07 (I clipped it from the Guardian)

In the case of the refinery, however, the company insists that there were not enough British workers trained to do the job, though there are now. But for such jobs to go abroad, local conditions have to be met - eg no undercutting the minimum wage.

So if Italians will do a better job for less money, I'd hire them. And if you found an Italian T-shirt that cost less than a British one, are you saying you'd refuse to buy it? Are all your possessions British-made? Do you actually check this before buying?
