Inland revenue have investigated my self assessment tax return going back 6 years. They have penalised me for additional duties and have charged me interest and a further net penalty of 25%. I would appreciate some advice please.

Advice on what?

I presume you surely didn't go through an investigation so serious as to open multiple years up to enquiry without using an accountant? If you didn't use the services of one Hell mend you. If you did I'm not sure what you expect to get from here now?

A penalty of that magnitude is certainly in order depending on the seriousness of the offence.
Well, do you agree with their assessment of what you should have paid? If so, there's little to quibble about. If you don't then you could appeal.
